Yes, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Southeastern Youth of the Year Event is a mouthful of an event title, but let me tell you, attending this event last night was a blessing. You see, I had always heard of the Boys and Girls Club, but I never really knew what they were about.
Ten young adults, who had all been chosen as the “Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year” from their home state, were in Atlanta competing for the title of “Southeastern Youth of the Year.” They each gave speeches about how the Boys and Girls Club had changed their life and how they wouldn’t be the people they are today without the support and guidance of the mentors and staff at their Club. As if giving a speech in front of a packed house full of adults wasn’t nerve-wracking enough, a panel of judges deliberated and chose one as the Southeastern Youth of the Year.
Hearing these kids talk about their hardships, what it was like growing up in an unstable home, and having to face adult situations at a very young age…let’s just say that I was shedding tears during every speech. I actually teared up now just thinking about it! They were incredibly strong, and as they talked about being the first in their family to graduate from high school, or mentoring younger Club members themselves, or any of the other positive things in their life, you just couldn’t help but feel a little more hopeful for the future.
So I’d like to give a big thank you to the Boys and Girls Club for letting us be a part of this event every year. We had much fun designing the look for this year (see my bad cell phone pictures below!) and cannot wait for their fall gala later this year. I definitely left this event a believer of the Boys and Girls Club organization.
(Below are some cell phone photos I snapped at the event last night. Note to self: bring an actual camera to these events!)
Purple dendrobium orchids were the flower of the night. They went perfectly with the modern feel of Atlanta’s premiere rooftop venue, Ventanas.
The poster for Georgia’s Youth of the Year. He was full of charisma and made all of us Georgians very proud!
Finally, the program from last night’s event. Love the event theme: “a foundation for great futures.”
